A Streetcar Named Desire| Studio One, UNSW
| 6th August - 10th August, 2014 | Written by Tennessee Williams | Directed by Chelsea Annie Needham | Produced by Brittany Richardson About the play
The original play by Williams told a story of how two people with wildly different perspectives, when forced together, can destroy the peace around them.
In the original, this is the destruction of Blanche DuBois, a delicate flower of fragile mental capacity. The protagonist Stanley Kowalski, is a brother-in-law, a slave to his primal instincts, making him irresistible but also highly dangerous. This adaptation explores a new perspective... Set in war torn 2007 Afghanistan, instead of late 1940’s New Orleans, the play won’t let you lay singular condemnation so easily. As Dr Phillip Zimbardo, infamous psychologist of the Stanford Prison Experiment suggests, 'everybody is capable of evil' if the 'right' push is applied. With the adaptation on stage and another parallel story off stage, how much you see of the off-stage narrative will influence your views on the on-stage chaos happening right in front of you. So pay attention. There are levels upon levels for you to find - to help understand why a half decent man with a slight temper turns into a criminal... |
