NUTS provides amazing opportunities for anyone passionate or curious about the art of costume design. If you’re interested in capturing the intricacies of character and reflecting them in clothing choice, NUTS is the perfect place for you.
The society is always incredibly keen to welcome new designers and provides plenty of opportunities to build skills through both workshops and plays. Our shows have large enough budgets that you can afford to be adventurous in designing and creating completely new and unique costumes.
What sort of costumes do we need?
NUTS puts on a whole plethora of shows set in different times and places - so we need costumes of absolutely every kind!
For example, some years the costumes ranged from bohemian style Shakespearean costumes to sparkly shoulder-padded 80s attire.
Some shows like to spice things up and mismatch costumes!
Where do our costumes come from?
Buying new costumes
For each of our plays, a portion of the budget is allotted to costumes, giving the costume designer the freedom to buy completely new costumes for the show and be reimbursed by the society.
This gives them the chance to design literally anything, as even if there aren’t appropriate costumes in our or CPL’s stores, they can be bought or made from scratch specifically for the show!
Any costume purchases should be discussed with the director and producer first.
How to get involved in costume design with NUTS
The best way to become involved in costume design with NUTS is to be part of a proposal team with a show. This involves writing a costume concept, drawing sketches, and figuring out a budget for all the costume items.
If you want to become involved in a proposal team as costume designer, when you join NUTS tick ‘Costume’ as one of your interests.
As a costume designer, you have the creative freedom to conceptualise and design whatever you think best serves the director's vision.
