Proposing A Show
If someone, or a group of someones wants to produce a show, they need to propose and pitch their idea to NUTS' elected Committee, according to our proposal system.
Proposals are the formula by which the NUTS committee can evaluate the merits of each potential show. Using a marking checklist, each proposal is given a score and feedback on how to improve. This structure can be found in the Proposal Handbook link below. Why do we run on this model? Read below to find out why. Semester One show proposals are staggered throughout the summer and early semester, allowing for a post-year breather and time to organise the society ready for a New Year and new membership. Semester Two show proposals are collectively due around the same dates, in order to narrow down three minor productions which would reflect a season. If you wish to propose a 'in slot' production, you need to do so within the allocated times, listed below. NUTS does accept 'off slot' proposals, depending on the project, its required resources and its benefit to the society. In order to be considered for a production slot, all crew members must be NUTS members prior to the Q&A. A hardcopy of the NUTS show contract must be signed by all crew members and presented to the NUTS President at the Q&A. The contract and example proposals are linked below also. |
NUTS Proposal System and Handbook
The handbook below contains the marking criteria and guidelines for a NUTS show proposal.
You MUST read it carefully before proposing a show.

Other Important Information
Rights Attainment:
NUTS committee will enquire about each team’s production rights. Please do not email publishing companies, as committee will do it on your behalf, during the early stages of proposing. If you would like us to attain a quote for you for the budget, please email us at committee@nuts.org.au
Advertising Positions:
In the Expression of Interest, proposal teams only require a Director, Producer, Lead Designer and Stage Manager. They should detail any other roles that have already been filled, and any unusual roles that they would like to advertise.
Advertising of positions will be done by committee on behalf of the show team, via Facebook, email and website.
Requesting assistant roles and providing opportunities to new members is looked upon fondly.
Off Slot Proposals:
NUTS is open to producing 'Out of Slot' shows which may have different venue requirements or different run-lengths to our standard slot.
This is usually dependant on NUTS' fiscal situation, organisational resources, and most importantly, if it serves the best interests of NUTS Full Members (UNSW Students). These shows are usually either experimental or self-devised theatre, community engaging projects (fundraising) or small scale productions (short plays, script readings, dance pieces).
If this interests you, please email committee@nuts.org.au!
Why Run On A Proposal System?:
NUTS owes its creative success and longevity to strong, well planned productions in which proposals are their road maps.
Theatre is an industry based on creative, yet calculated risk. This is particularly true in NUTS as we provide generous budgets for our minor shows.
It is imperative to ensure all productions are economically sound and their creative elements are cohesive and co-existing.
NUTS Proposal System is managed and determined by the NUTS Committee, an elected body of UNSW Students. These individuals are trusted to best ensure fairness in proposal marking, providing feedback and providing opportunities for proposing teams to improve for future re-proposing.
The final chosen shows reflect a high standard for amature theatre, and have a large foundation to stand upon going forward for cast and crew.
