Man of La Mancha

Man of La Mancha

Thrust into the dungeons of the Spanish Inquisition, a man pleads to the violent inmates for his life by entertaining them with a tale of chivalry, romance and hope. The man is Cervantes and the tale is Don Quixote de la Mancha.

There are many parts in this show - leads, cameos and chorus. A few roles involve singing and dancing, some just singing, some character singing, some just dancing, and some just acting (yes, there is a lead male character that does not sing or dance!). If you have ever been afraid to audition for a musical because you don't think you can sing, then this is your big chance.

Please prepare a song for the auditions (anything except songs from Man of La Mancha). If you are auditioning for a non-singing role, we would still love to hear you sing so we can consider you for all roles, but if you do not feel comfortable we understand. You may either sing a cappella, or accompanied by our MD, Ness, on piano (please bring sheet music in the correct key). There is no need to prepare anything else - we will do cold reads on the day.

Available audition days and times:
Sunday (8th June): 12-3pm
Tuesday (10th): 12-3pm
Wednesday (11th): 12-3pm
Thursday (12th): 7-9pm
(If you cannot make any of these times, please email us and we'll try to work something out.)

**PLEASE NOTE**
You must email la.mancha.nuts@gmail.com in order to gain an audition time slot. Please offer three 1 hour slots (in order of preference) and you will receive a return email with your audition time allocation and location.

Callbacks will be on Sunday the 15th of June. All auditionees will need to be available for either the 10-2 or 1-4 callback slots. Dance auditions (where appropriate) will be conducted at callbacks.

Week 12: Write'r's' Week

NUTS Presents:

Write?r?s? week

Because fussing over apostrophes is for losers

In Week 12, NUTS presents four unique and exciting workshops for writers, performance makers, budding sound designers and those of you who just like?a?to?watch.

MONDAY 2 JUNE, 6pm in Studio One: Sound Workshop
Are you one of those people who have snakes living in the gunk of your toes? Interesting. I can't help you with that. What I can help you with is your understanding of the possibilities of a sound design for theatre.
If you're interested in sound design, looking to be involved, unsure of where to start, what all the knobs and dials and stuff on the sound board do, I'm having a night explaining all these little doohickie things. I'll also explain the technical aspects involved, the possibilities of what your sound design could entail, advice on sourcing\making the best sounds, my understanding of what makes an effective sound design, as well as the relationship between the designer and the rest of the show.
It'll be informal, relaxed, informative and fun, and I'll try and make sure there are refreshments and more available. We'll start at 6pm and should only run about an hour/hour and a half. Nothing too heavy! Anyone can be involved, whether or not you understand the frequency cancellations occurring in 5.1 mixes, or if you became fearful of technology once they invented the cassette. If you have any questions, feel free to email Tom at tommeh@nuts.org.au and I'll keep you posted.

WEDNESDAY 4 JUNE, 8pm Studio One: Short Pieces Night
Submit your short works (10 minutes or less) to us, if you?d like to take part in a rehearsed reading. You can see what does and doesn?t work, and think about how to develop the piece further or shine it up for performance. To submit a piece, email writingweek@nuts.org.au ? otherwise come to Studio One at 8pm on Wednesday night to view these exciting works! If you?re keen to be used as an actor, email us as we will need your help!

FRIDAY 6 JUNE, 8pm Studio One: Longers Works Night
Are you working on a full length play, but need some help to get it to where it needs to be? Choose your crappiest 10 pages of the work and we?ll offer you a space to have a rehearsed reading with actors. It?s an invaluable learning experience for any writer, and heaps of fun for the audience member. Same place, same time as Wednesday. Email writingweek@nuts.org.au to get involved.

SATURDAY 7 JUNE, 2pm for participants and 8pm for audience, Studio One: Midnight in the garden of The Chattering Monkey - an improvised performance event, pARTy & Arts lab
Calling all PERFORMANCE MAKERS!!! Mudlove, a new ensemble, wishes to invite any keen artists to participate in an Arts Lab to be conducted on Saturday June 7th in Studio One. There 25 spots for performers. There is no commitment aside from the Saturday?s work. Midnight in the garden of The Chattering Monkey aims to provoke an explosive improvised event and a safe haven for experimental performance work. There will be a showing at 8pm ALTHOUGH performers are to arrive at 2pm for the commencement of workshops.
Interested? Email Emma Maye @ 3mmamay3@gmail.com with your name/contact details/a brief outline of an idea that you want to work with on the day.
Otherwise, do you just want to watch? Show up at 8pm with your $5 where there will be a few drinks and refreshments and a chance to see some exciting experimental new works.

SEE YOU THERE, WRITE'R'S'/and other!!!!

Propose for PACT and Io Myers for semester two!

If you?ve been dreaming of putting on a show in PACT or Io, now?s your chance!

In Week 3 (10/8-16/8) NUTS is lucky enough to have PACT Theatre to offer. This is the first time we have this theatre and we are extremely excited to have access to such a great off-campus space.

In Week 4 (17/8-23/8) we have Io Myers. Whilst this slot has usually been reserved for SPASMS, we?re welcoming other proposals for a major to be held here.

Both spaces are extremely flexible and never before has NUTS had the opportunity to use them in this manner. To view a floor plan of Io Myers click here

We are encouraging people to start putting proposals together for these two slots now.

The deadline for these two slots is now May 23. (We realise that?s very soon, but we want to give a lot of time for the shows).

Please email committee@nuts.org.au if you have questions or need help putting together a crew. We?re more than happy to include shout outs in our emails. Also, get on the forums if you need to find crew: www.nuts.org.au/forums

Ridley Double Bill Auditions

We are delighted to announce that the Week 9 slot for NUTS will be a double bill of Phillip Ridley plans directed by Evin Donohoe: Sparkleshark and Fairytale Heart.

The audition details for the Ridley Double Bill are as follows:
Monday March 31, 6pm-9pm and Tuesday April 1, 6.30pm-9pm.

The location is yet to be confirmed (but probably the CATS rooms behind Studio One). More info about venue will come out soon. Keep checking the website!

You should prepare a monologue of 2-3 minutes length in an English accent. Any English accent is fine. We would prefer the monologue to be in prose and from the last fifty years. We would prefer it to come from a published source ? something already performed or in print. We recommend you to look at monologues from some of Phillip Ridley's other plays, but please do not perform anything from Fairytaleheart or Sparkleshark. Anyone unable to prepare a monologue by the audition dates will be able to cold-read from a selection of monologues available on the night.

Please email ridley@nuts.org.au if you intend to audition, and we can confirm a time and location with you. If you are unable to make either March 31 or April 1, please email us and we can come to some other arrangement.

It's also a fantastic opportunity to speak to Kim and Bec who are producing Domestic (Wk 2) and Jorge who is directing 'Theatre of Blood' (Wks 5/6) about getting involved in their shows!

But most importantly, it's a chance to get together and get enthusiastic about NUTS 2008 (oh, and drink out booze and eat our meticulously prepared fairy breads)!

See you there!
