This proposal suggests that we have three productions, each a small cast (1-6) contemporary piece of theatre which would have two performances each (for a total of six performances: Tuesday to Saturday night with a Saturday matinee). The aim would be to give new directors the ability to try it out or allow the ability to experiment with a less traditional style of theatre which may not necessarily have the appeal to sell out a full week-long production in Studio One. The intention is to use the week 9 slot to take advantage of the bulk of semester, gathering the directors and deciding the shows during the mid-year break and casting all three shows together Week 1, allowing auditionees to go for a number of different characters in different styles of performance.
The three productions would be thematically linked through the expertise and influence of the artistic director and lead designer. This will create not only a more cohesive experience for the audience and the creative team, but will also make the week fit into the overall season structure more effectively.
This week aims to give opportunities to new and experimenting directors and would allow for a reasonably large overall cast (around 8-15) meaning that newbies will be able to get involved in both the acting and directing side. And with the large amount of work required by the designers, assistants come strongly recommended.
