When The Rain Stops Falling

| NUTS Best Production (2015 Ballwards/30th Gala)
| Studio One, UNSW
| 20th - 24th October, 2015
| Written by Andrew Bovell
| Directed by Andrew Signor

| Produced by Keri Tsaoucis
About the play
It begins with a fish falling from the sky and ends with that same fish eaten for dinner. Andrew Bovell’s When the Rain Stops Falling is a rich tapestry of memory; a chronology spanning over eight decades, following four generations of a family trying to find their bearings in a life which their ancestral context thrusts upon them. We witness a world where the past, present and future all co-exist; but not in harmony.

Let’s shoot through time. Take you from the 1960s to 2039; from London to the Coorong; from Adelaide to Alice Springs and the cultural monolith that is Uluru. Let’s share the journey through these times and landscapes, piecing the fragments together one by one.

Men abandon their sons, women banish their husbands and wives lose their minds while husbands stand by them. Sons search for their fathers and fathers remain hidden; that is, until one young man knocks at the door of his estranged father and 80 years of ancestry breathe once again. Let’s journey through the anguish, laughter, living rooms and bowls of fish soup to find out what happened to make a fish fall from the sky...
