A little bit about NUTS

NUTS is the New South Wales University Theatrical Society.

Formed in 1985, NUTS has been primarily a creative outlet for UNSW students, offering the opportunity to not only produce, design and act in theatrical productions, but also be apart of a supportive and diverse range of people who need just a little something outside the daily grind of study and work.

NUTS is a society dedicated to giving everyone a chance, regardless of experience. Whether it's acting, singing, dancing, graphics design, event managing, publicity, producing, video editing, sound design, directing, set design, costume design, lighting design, assistant jobs, drilling in screws, screaming your lungs out at Trashiokie, WHATEVER - NUTS does it, and so can you.

In NUTS we encourage everyone to get involved! You don't have to be experienced, just enthusiastic, motivated - and of course, a little bit NUTS! We put on a number of shows throughout the year, including both plays and musicals, all chosen through a proposal system.

How NUTS began

NUTS was originally conceived in 1985, by Arts student Jonathan Green and friends, who wanted to redevelop and energise the various performance groups on campus at the time. That year, from as much as we know today, they first performed the Thornton Wilder play, The Matchmaker.

It wasn't until March 7th, 1986 (1pm to be exact) NUTS was formally initiated by the student union as an official club of UNSW. Yet, with wanna-be members banding together under the flag of NUTS since 1985, we consider this to be our birth year. Ideas last longer than paperwork!

Since 85', NUTS has continued this tradition, performing many shows each year with 30 + years worth of talented performers, designers, writers, dancers, production leaders and tech superstars.

Did you know that NUTS has performed Little Shop of Horrors three times throughout it's many years, or that we have performed The Real Inspector Hound four times?

Do you want to know more fun facts like these about NUTS' history? Then lucky for you we have a convenient button just below, which will take inside our extensive history, dating back to 1985. Here, you can find past production images, programs, old names and other materials to show you just how big our NUTS really was!
