Opportunities to grow as an actor in NUTS are plentiful, with a large production team allowing you to focus and flourish. NUTS prides itself on developing performers, ensuring that productions showcase the talent at UNSW. Auditioning with NUTS
NUTS holds open auditions to all ages, genders, races and sexual orientation. This includes all ranges of skill, as well as allowing non-students to be involved, or students outside of UNSW.
NUTS holds auditions and call-backs for every play. These often consist of performing a short monologue, cold script reads or more informal methods of auditioning such as improv. Call-backs are often done on a Saturday or Sunday after weekday auditions, and consist of more intensive audition processes alongside other actors, to ensure a robust day for casting. All minor slot productions (1-2 per trimester) have a 4 week rehearsal period minimum in which to memorise lines, develop characters, block scenes and prepare for performance week. Each minor or major production performs 5 nights of a week, allowing you, the actor, to immerse yourself in a similar professional environment to the big lights of STC. |

Domestic WITH NUTS
"Written in a day, rehearsed in a week, funded on a tenner"
- Some old NUTS Sadist Often the best way to immerse yourself with NUTS is to jump in head first to our student-written comedy sketch show, aptly titled Domestic! Domestic is NUTS most insane, exhilarating, side-splittingly funny event of the year. There are no rules in Domestic. It's just a free-for all of student writing, improvisation and innovative ways to send the audience into hysterics. Most NUTters first experience with the society is through Domestic, as it offers the ability to be involved in small projects which culminate into a single-themed production. There are no auditions for Domestic; so don't be shy and show us what you've got! *NUTS does not advocate flashing in public, unless everybody else joins in... |
Acting Workshops and Theatresports with NUTS
NUTS often holds acting workshops and theatresports sessions, designed to help you hone your craft or explore the fun of acting through basic techniques and improvisation. These sessions are lively, energetic and great for meeting other members of the society, especially if you're a new member!
Keep tuned on the Facebook page to find out more about these as they come up! |
Screen and Sound Acting with NUTS
As NUTS is a UNSW Society, many of our members study and work within technologically-savvy industries such as sound design and film.
Depending on the production, there are times when pre-recorded voices and film are needed in order to aid a particular play. This means that actors have the opportunity to try their hand at voice acting and film acting. This allows NUTS to utilise video and sound equipment which helps students grow as future professionals. NUTS has run film-acting workshops in the past, and looks to continue this alongside voice-acting workshops. See the Publicity page for more information about film-acting in NUTS. |
Musical Theatre with NUTS
Acting in NUTS also extends to musical theatre, which is it's own exciting world of performance.
NUTS has a long history of producing phenomenal musicals, showcasing productions at NIDA, Seymour Centre and Science Theatre. NUTS occasionally holds musical theatre workshops for those keen enough to work on their E flats. |
