DON'S PARTY| Studio One, UNSW
| 2nd - 6th August, 2016 | Written by David Williamson | Directed by Andrew Signor | Produced by Jennifer Jackson About the play
“I think we’d all be surprised at the sort of things Mr. and Mrs. Average do in the privacy of their own bedroom.”
It was almost time... The year: 1969. The party: a federal election. Don and Kath hope that there will be a change of government, and throw a party to welcome in a new progressive epoch. As the tide turns against a reformist Labor, the good cheer palls, and the faded ideals and repressed feelings of the guests rear their ugly heads for all to see. David Williamson's brilliant suburban satire pokes fun at a society on the brink of emerging from a generation of comfortable, conservative political and social values. It examines the phenomena of Australia's 'Tall Poppy Syndrome' through a raucous haze of booze and infidelity, aided by a seemingly unchallenged spectre of recreational nostalgia hanging over these poor middle aged dreamers. |
