Each year one of the seven performance slots is dedicated to a major production; a high value production produced at a large theatre venue.

Historically, the major has been more often than not a musical, but it is not limited to any performance style or medium.

The major is performed in second semester, and is performed outside Studio One. Past locations include the Fig Tree Theatre, the NIDA Playhouse Theatre, the Seymour Centre Downstairs Theatre and the Io Myers Studio.

Whilst it is still fundamentally a show slot, and many of the same protocols and procedures apply, the major production often follows these tenants:
  • Opportunities for large cast
  • Opportunities for large crew
  • Large scale set design
  • Grand scale publicity campaign
  • Involvement with internal and external campus entities
  • Opportunities for a diverse range of performing skillsets
  • Fosters NUTS Community and the Arts at UNSW

For those proposing a musical, please read the Musical Director's handbook below:
The Music Director's Handbook (.pdf)
A full list of musicals NUTS has performed over it's history is available here:

Proposing for the Major*
*NOTE: This information may change for 2017. NUTS members will be given fair notice of changes if they are to occur.

Due to the complex nature of a major production, the date for the proposal is quite early in the year of production to best facilitate rehearsals, design, advertisement, venue hire and rights attainment.

In 2016, NUTS changed how the Major is proposed for. The major requires a pre-proposal, similar to those prescribed for those in the minor productions.

This pre-proposal must include the following:
  • The directorial concept for the particular show. This must include the thematic concerns of the show, with comments on casting vision. A synopsis must accompany the directorial concept.
  • The names and relevant experience of the following core team members: Director, Musical Director, Producer, Stage Manager and Technical Director.
  • A rudimentary listing of cost estimates. This need not be finalised.
  • A general set design. This need not be finalised.

No other full proposal elements are required.

This pre-proposal should provide proof to the NUTS Committee that the 2016 Major Team has a solid conceptual framework, and sound team experience.

The pre-proposal that most successfully addresses the aforementioned criterion, in accordance with the relevant proposal marking criteria, will be given approval to make a financial deposit on rights.

This pre-proposal schema has been introduced for the 2016 Major to avoid complications with the late attainment of show rights.

Any questions should be addressed to 'committee@nuts.org.au.'
The pre-proposal should be sent to that email also.

Applicants are encouraged to seek clarification and model proposals from committee.

Late submissions will not be accepted.
