Producing
From the budgeting and the scheduling of a show, to the management of directors and other show departments - the producer is the glue and overseer/manager of a theatrical show.
If you have a knack for financial budgeting, enjoy generating great marketing strategies to encourage high-rocketing ticket sales, and working with a large team of people, being a producer may just be for you! Our producers come from a whole range of degrees - from Arts to Commerce to Science - it doesn't particularly matter, as long as you possess organisation and management skills, have a good eye for money and a love for theatre. |
PROPOSING
All NUTS productions run on a proposal system, which means that before you can sink your teeth into producing, you have to convince NUTS first!
Finding a production team which you are comfortable with, talented and can rely on is paramount, as at the end of the day, they are the ones keeping everything afloat. The producer's job is keeping everyone in line, so choosing the right people is important. The producer's main contribution to the proposal is the rehearsal schedule, budget and overall coherency of the proposal. The producer also keeps everyone on track with their segment of the proposal, ensuring the proposal is submitted by the required deadline. |
BUDGETING
Budgeting a show is one of the most fundamental and essential steps to mounting a production. The producer's job is to plan and outline the budget, as well as ensuring that everybody (from the director, set, sound, costuming) sticks to their budget throughout the production rehearsal and run time.
This means that the producer should endeavour to break even on their show, and hopefully ensure financial success. While NUTS is a non-profit organisation and strives to produce quality content, we concurrently aim to at least break even on shows, so that funding can be sufficient for future productions. If a producer or production team has enquiries about budgeting appropriately for their show, they should contact the NUTS Treasurer. |
TICKET BREAKDOWN
Including a ticket breakdown is the first step in gathering a good idea about how much the show will generate in revenue from ticket sales alone. NUTS usually has 3 different prices for tickets - NUTS, Arc and General Admission. The ticket breakdown should give a clear and detailed indication of the amount the show anticipates to earn, depending on different circumstances, from worst (25% seat capacity) to best (100% seat capacity). If there is significant anticipated difference in revenue and expenses, there should be plans for fundraising included in the proposal e.g. a bake sale. |
REHEARSAL SCHEDULING
Rehearsal scheduling will need careful planning with the respective director on a show. A breakdown of characters within scenes, and what the director feels most comfortable working on each rehearsal, will be of imperative. A producer needs to ensure that both director/cast and production team will be on the same page by show week, and that there is a cohesion between the teams.
Don't forget to include some social events in the midst as well! This will give both the production team and cast a chance to take a break from all the hustle and bustle of putting on the production. |
