SET DESIGN

Picture
Savages (2017)
What’s a play without the wooden deck of a boat? Or the multiple, platformed levels of a house? Or a hotel reception desk?

Set is one of the fundamental aspects of any show, and with NUTS you have the chance to be involved in creating the set for our productions!

Whether you already have the skills with power tools, past construction experience, or are a newbie that’s passionate about “setting the scene” (sorry), NUTS is always excited by the dreams and designs presented with each show, and provides plenty of opportunities to build skills through our productions.

Buying new set and materials

For each of our plays, a portion of the budget is allotted to set, giving the set designer the freedom to buy new materials for the show and be reimbursed by the society; you have the creative freedom to conceptualise and design whatever you think best serves the director’s vision. Any set or material purchases should be discussed with the director and producer first.

How to get involved in set design with NUTS

Picture
Proposal scale set design for What is the Matter with Mary Jane (2018)
The best way to become involved in set design with NUTS is to be part of a proposal team with a show. This involves writing a set concept in line with the director’s vision, including inspiration, safety and practicality of your proposed set, as well as including a scale technical drawing of the set in the Studio One space and figuring out an anticipated budget for all the set items. Lead show teams are given the chance to collect the measurements of the Studio before submitting their proposal, so that the scale technical drawing is accurate.

If you want to become involved in a proposal team as set designer, when you join NUTS tick ‘Set’ as one of your interests, and keep an eye on the NUTS Facebook page for crew call outs. If you’re a new member of the society, or have limited previous experience with set design or construction, come along to our social society events to meet other society members who may have more experience, or ask Committee members to put you in contact with experienced set designers of the society so that you can ask them for advice or guidance.

So what are you waiting for?

Yeah, what are you waiting for?

Join NUTS now to begin a journey you’ll never regret!
