What is the Matter with Mary Jane?

| Studio One, UNSW
| 31st July - 4th August, 2018
| Story by Sancia Robinson
| Written by Wendy Harmer

| Directed by Jo Bradley

| Produced by Liam Jarvis
| Designed by Sarah Stormont

| Stage Managed by Sophie Giese

Sancia is your typical sixteen year old. She fights with her mum, hits the gym, and hangs out with her friends. Her favourite food is chocolate, she loves trashy magazines and she’s obsessed with celebrities. On top of her busy social life, she also does well in school: “I was already a good student, top marks in Physics, Chem and Maths, but if dieting were a subject, I would have topped the state.”

This one-woman show is a fierce, sardonic, no-holds barred look at the experience of one woman battling with Anorexia and Bulimia. Both a devastating drama, and a heart wrenching black comedy, this raw and honest work exposes the painful reality of an under-discussed mental illness that affects 15% of Australian women. One talented and charismatic actress will take us on Sancia’s journey in this intimate extended monologue, talking them through her every thought and feeling as she goes on this compelling journey of sickness and recovery.

Often studied in schools, ‘What is the Matter with Mary Jane?’ has become a highly regarded play in contemporary Australian theatre. Based on the true story of Sancia Robinson and written by acclaimed Australian comedian Wendy Harmer, this rarely performed, powerful piece of writing is not one to be missed
